Lisa – Falmouth
Just over a year ago, Lisa from Falmouth was left with extensive sight loss following a stroke at the age of 36. Since then she has relied on friends and family to help her with day-to-day tasks. Lisa received a Synapptic Diamond smartphone through the Inspiring Futures Fund. She said: “When I applied for the fund I was adamant that I didn’t want a phone with software for ‘blind’ people as I still have some sight left and I didn’t think I needed it. Within two minutes of talking to Rodney Keat at The Sight Centre I had changed my mind!
“He showed me a phone with software already installed that has bigger and bolder text and colour contrast options to help me see the screen more clearly. I can use it to scan letters and labels and it reads them back to me which is so useful because as well as losing my sight, the stroke left me with dyslexia so I find reading really difficult. Now I don’t need to rely on other people to read appointment letters for me or help me take my medication.
“It’s the little things that make the biggest difference when you lose your sight and for me, this phone has given me back my independence.”
