Jacqueline – Penzance
Jacqueline, from Penzance, was registered blind in 2002. She relied a lot on other people to help her with day to day tasks and worried about going shopping with friends in case she got separated from them. But since receiving an accessible smartphone through the Inspiring Futures Fund, all that has changed.
“A friend of mine, who is also blind, had a Synapptic Smartphone and thought that it would help me. But I’m not very technically minded and didn’t think that I would be able to use it. However, Rod Keat from iSightCornwall showed me that I could and it’s wonderful! I can speak text messages into the phone which it converts and sends for me. It tells me everything I’m doing as I do it, so I don’t have to worry about making mistakes. I don’t have to rely on other people to read labels or letters for me as I can take a photo on the phone and it will read the text back to me.
“Before having the phone I was worried about going out with friends in case I got lost and couldn’t call anyone to tell them where I was. Now I’m much more independent, I go shopping with my friends and I have more confidence. It has made a huge difference to my life.”
