Pauline – St Austell
Pauline, from St Austell, was born with cataracts. She had a number of operations when she was young but because of her age they caused damage to her cornea and her eyesight deteriorated. After relying on family to help her with her shopping and reading her mail, Pauline wanted to regain some of her independence.
“I’ve had bad eyesight all my life but it’s getting worse with age. I can’t see well enough to read my own mail or do my own shopping so I have to rely on my family to help me. But it’s frustrating when other people have to read your post because you lose your privacy. And sometimes I just want to nip to the shops for a couple of bits without waiting until someone can come with me. I feel like I’ve spent my whole life waiting for help.
“iSightCornwall have made a real difference. Without the fund I wouldn’t have been able to afford the Ruby video magnifier. It is so clear that I can read labels in the shops, I can read my own post and I can read menus when I go out with my sister for lunch. When your eyesight goes, you feel like everything has been taken away from you. But now I’ve got a little bit of independence back and it’s making a big difference.”
