iSightCornwall invited to local groups as a guest speaker

The iSightCornwall team have had a busy few weeks visiting local groups and organisations around Cornwall as a guest speaker.

We were delighted to be invited to speak to a number of fantastic groups including the residents of Trelawney House in Falmouth, the members of Truro Afternoon Women’s Institute, the residents of Lys Lander House in Truro and the members of the Penzance Macular Group.

Warm Welcome

Each group gave a warm welcome to our guest speaker, Jodi Strick who handles communications and volunteering at iSightCornwall and she recently researched and put together a comprehensive history of the charity covering the decades from our formation in 1856 right up to the modern day.

Jodi used this knowledge to give an overview of the history to each group, explaining how the charity grew from helping Cornish miners to everything we do today.

Explanation about iSightCornwall

The groups were then given an explanation about how iSightCornwall can help people with sight loss, covering a wide range of our services. They heard how people with sight loss can get free access to life-changing magnifiers and low vision aids; how technology can help people keep or regain their independence; and how we help people look after their physical and mental wellbeing with clubs, social activities, and befrienders.

Demonstrations

The audience members were also able to have a demonstration of some of the aids and technology mentioned in the talk. They could have a look at and try on some of the MaxTV glasses, which allow people with sight loss to continue watching their favourite shows; they were able to see and hear how a liquid level indicator can help with making a cup of tea safely and easily; and some groups were even able to use an electronic magnifier to zoom in on text and change the colour contrast.

Jodi discussed how even the small things, such as an orange tactile Bumpon placed on the start button of a microwave, can make a big difference to someone with sight loss.

Following the talk

Following the talk, the groups were given time to ask questions, whether about their own sight loss experiences, the charity’s history or on how they can support iSightCornwall.

One member of the Truro Afternoon WI said: “We found your talk most enlightening. I think all the members have gone home with some information to pass on to friends and family.”

Jodi said: “Thank you to all of the groups who have welcomed me into their spaces this month to give a talk. It’s brilliant to be able to share the work of iSightCornwall with you all and be able to offer an insight into how we are there to help anyone in Cornwall with sight loss.”
