iSightCornwall visit The Leach Pottery

MEMBERS of iSightCornwall have had the opportunity to get their hands dirty and create some art at Leach Pottery in St Ives.

In a two-part series of workshops, members were first introduced to the story of Leach Pottery and its’ founders Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada before embarking on a guided tour of the premises. Guided by the pottery’s expert team, the iSightCornwall members were able to feel some of the creations made by Leach Pottery artists, experience the different sensory atmospheres of each part of the pottery and have an audio described tour.

After the Tour

Following the tour it was time for the members to roll up their sleeves and have a go at making their own creations.
They made pinch clay pots, using their sense of touch to bring their creation into being and even had a go at using the potter’s wheel in the workshop – again relying on touch and audio instructions.
One of the members who attended said: “It’s been a fantastic experience; I had never tried making anything with clay before but I’ve really enjoyed giving it a go. All of the Leach Pottery works have such interesting textures and shapes, so it’s been really interesting to explore them by touch.”

Firing the Clay

After finishing their pots, cups, and other creations the members used the iSightCornwall eye logo as their unique signature and left them with the experienced Leach Pottery team to fire to perfection.

The members were then able to collect their finished product at the second workshop.

Bethan Perry who attended the event from iSightCornwall said: “All of our members who attended seemed to really enjoy the workshops and they have all made some lovely things to take home. The guided tour using the sense of touch and detailed audio descriptions was a brilliant experience.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to the team at Leach Pottery for giving us such a lovely time and for inviting iSightCornwall members to the pottery.”
