FAQs

Our Customer Services Officer, Dom reviews the HandyReader High Definition Portable Magnifier:

What does the product do?

The Handy Reader HD is a budget, portable magnifier with a 3.5″ high contrast screen offering 2x-24x magnification. It has 8 colour enhancement modes and a battery life of up to 3 hours of continuous use.

Is the product easy to use?

The HandyReader’s tactile controls ensure that it is easy to operate for all users.

What are the pros and cons of the product?

The biggest selling point for the HandyReader is the price, it is extremely rare to find an electronic magnifier with such great specs at such a low price. The HandyReader offers a high level of magnification (up to 24x) which is considerably higher than some of its pricier competitors.

Unfortunately, the HandyReader does fall short in a number of areas. The device does not have an image gallery feature and the user is unable to store captured images onto the HandyReader’s internal memory. The HandyReader does have a TV output function, however, this is only compatible with older composite TV connections (the red, white and yellow cable required for TV output is included in the box). The device’s 3.5″ screen is also one of the smallest on the market.

What alternatives are available, and how do they measure up?

I feel that the HandyReader is the best electronic magnifier in its price bracket. If you have a slightly higher budget and are looking for a more powerful magnifier, you may wish to consider the Compact+ HD electronic magnifier. The Compact+ has a larger 4.3″ screen and 16 colour combinations. Unfortunately, the Compact+ only offers 3x to 10x magnification and has no TV output or expandable memory to store more than 4 captured images.

Is the product worth the money?

If you are looking for a quality magnifier that won’t break the bank, the HandyReader is a perfect choice. If you are looking for a more powerful device with a host of added features I highly recommend the Explore 5 electronic magnifier from Humanware. The Explore 5 is more expensive than the HandyReader and the Compact+ but does boast 2x-22x magnification, more than 18 colour enhancement modes, TV output via HDMI cable and the ability to save and view 1000s of captured images.
